Support for the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s field mission to Nigeria, improving healthcare studies in the largest population-based HIV/AIDS prevalence survey in a single country:
From July 2018 to January 2019, Pilgrims Africa Limited (PAL) provided protective security to the university’s Institute of Human Virology (IHV)-led consortium deployed in Nigeria for over 6 months, protecting a total of 108 teams performing field research in all 36 States. The project was funded by the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with the government of Nigeria and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. PAL teams secured 1,080 people each day, with a total of 108 teams working simultaneously in batches of 6 States to cover the whole country. Protection was also provided to 108 laboratories around Nigeria throughout the project. PAL executed this task with zero lost time injuries and successful mitigation of incidents, while facing considerable challenges of planning, control, communications, and intelligence gathering required. As a result, PAL received a special mention by the President of Nigeria in his closing address, who was sponsor of this immense task.
Support for the College of Europe research experts deployed in North-western Nigeria:
Over a period of two months, PAL supported two expatriate consultants from the College of Europe to carry out significant fieldwork in North-western Nigeria, which required secure transport, mobile tracking, constant communications, ongoing risk assessments and daily security updates. The research team travelled together between 6 States, comprising of Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina and Niger states. A dedicated security manager was assigned to create a route assessment and journey management plan, gather intelligence, and provide vital information to each of the projected locations. PAL were able to provide additional support as the project was extended beyond the initial research period from March to May 2021.
Providing 24/7 Control Room, Data Analysis, Patrols and Rapid Response Site Security Management for IHS Towers across Abuja Region:
IHS Towers, one of the largest telecommunications service provider, owner, and operator in Nigeria, began a network site security management campaign and required PAL to secure their assets in the Abuja region of Taraba, Niger, Yobe, FCT (Federal Capital Territory), Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi and Adamawa.
The PAL security team includes watchkeepers, data analysts, both based in the PSOC control room and in the Patrol units, which consist of a driver, Commander & 2 Mobile Police (MOPOLs) in the field. A total of 32 Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) are currently deployed in the field patrolling several sites based on geo-coordinates, with 4 watchkeepers & analysts dispatching, analysing, and logging incidents and issues in the 24/7 control room.
In addition, PAL watchkeepers monitor CCTV on each site to capture any HSSE infringements or suspicious activity, working with the data analysts to evaluate footage and dispatch the nearest patrol team for verification at the site.
The team generates a report using PAL’s proprietary software, which compiles images and incident logs to be sent to the IHS’ security team for action, management, assessment, and documentation. The ongoing project provides significant data gathering, analysis and reporting to prevent losses to IHS’ business across the region.
